Princess 12/19/10: 5 Dogs - Gainsville, GA to Providence, RI & Manchester, NH

Princess, an 8 y/o cattle dog, was owned by a farmer and had a litter of pups. He wasn't willing to care for them, so they were surrendered and flown north. He also didn't want to pay for her spaying. To compound the problem, she was HW positive and needed treatment. Then the vet found a mammary tumor. The farmer had no interest in Princess at this point and surrendered her. She was fully treated and recovered, but now needed a home. No one could imagine that Princess had a private jet flight in her future...

Delta
10/31/10: 6 Dogs - Hickory, SC to White Plains, NY

Mister is a 2 month old Australian Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix that came into animal control as a stray along with his 4 brothers. They all got adopted but Mister. Hailey is a 6 month old shepard mix that came into animal control as a stray. She was on her last day there and was saved right in the nick of time. She is very submissive and shy and probably has never been shown an ounce of love.

Adorabelle, Delta, and Denali came in to animal control as a litter of boxer mix puppies. They were not adopted in time and added to the euthanasia list, but were taken off when there was hope of a transport. Aspen is a super cute Newfoundland puppy and the only one of his litter that landed at animal control. The location of the others is unknown. He was not adopted in time and added to the euthanasia list, but like the boxer mix pups, was taken off just in time...

Magoo's Fosters, Magoo, Capt Jack, and Beth 10/31/10: 1 Dog - Daytona Beach, FL to Quakertown, PA

Magoo came into the shelter blind. He was in so much pain that the vet's couldn't fully examine him and weren't sure if he still had eyes. A surgeon worked to save his eyesight and found out he was deaf as well. He's a sweet and wonderful puppy that needs to get to a special foster to be taught sign language so he can have a happy and wonderful life with the lucky family that adopts him...

Mike M., Al Brin, and Mike S. at Queen City 10/10/10: 14 Dogs - Anderson, SC to NH/ME

Down in Anderson, SC, is a huge animal shelter with easily 500 dogs in it on a day-to-day basis. In this economy, not many of these dogs will find local adopters. Fortunately, the women that run the shelter for the city are very, very dedicated to working with rescues and transporters to get as many dogs out of their shelter as possible and on their way to parts of the country where there is not an animal overpopulation problem and where the dogs will more likely find new homes of their own. But there is a huge amount of dogs and many end up on death row...perfectly adoptable...but not able to get out in time...

Lois, Walter, and Scooby 09/19-20/10: 2 Dogs - Dekalb, IL to Penn Yan, NY

Another shocking story of a family who planned to move, but couldn't take the pets, so they were dropped off at a shelter. Unfortunately, it was a high-kill shelter, and despite their being perfectly loving animals, there was no room and no takers. The family should have consulted MyApartmentMap.com to locate an animal friendly location...

7 Pups & 2 Kittens 09/04/10: 7 puppies & 2 kittens - Anderson, SC to NH & ME

The six pups in the litter were turned into the shelter at a very young 4 weeks of age, without the mother. They would have been immediately euthanized due to no room and the probability that they would have gotten sick. Rhett, the houndish pup, was found by a young lady who found him wandering around her neighborhood abandoned. The two kittens were from a litter found on the side of the road. They were only about 3 weeks old. Very lucky kittens to be found out in the middle of nowhere...

Dan, Andy, and Josie
Andy and Josie
08/08/10: 2 Dogs - Falmouth, KY to Sanford, ME

Someone found Andy, felt sorry for him and took him in. He had heartworm disease, severe bronchitis, horrible demodectic skin mange, and was rail thin. The owner agreed to treatments, but when Andy was finally ready to go to his new home they decided to surrender him to a local shelter because they didn't want the bill for his treatment. From being neglected and tossed to the streets, then abandoned by "new loving" people, to staying at animal hospital, Andy is now on to a family that will always love him...

Josie was found on side of road by the local dog catcher, brought in to be euthanized because she had huge open gashes across her back feet. The cuts required twice daily treatment of flushing and medicated packing, then bandages, along with antibiotics. It took about a month to heal the wounds. She was sweet and happy despite her ordeal. Now she'll make her new family happy...

Shih tzu 05/23/10: 1 Dog - Wilkes-Barre, PA to Manchester, NH

One of our ARF pilots wound up with an abandoned old Shih Tzu that was headed to the shelter. It was a neighbors dog that had to move and couldn't take him. Our pilot volunteered to take him so he wouldn't end up at Animal Control. The pilot got all his vet paperwork and he's in good health. He's five years old, black and white and about thirty pounds. We reached out to our rescue network and Journey Ewell of the Manchester Animal Shelter offered to take him and find a forever home. Thanks to Jeff and to Journey for helping this abandoned dog...

But there is a huge amount of dogs and many end up on death row...perfectly adoptable...but not able to get out in time.

A few rescues in the Northeast have agreed to take over 30 "death row dogs" from the Anderson shelter, rehabilitate them and find them new homes. Now these lucky dogs just need a way to get from SC to their final destinations...and that's where ARF comes in!...

Duncan, his First Officer, & pax 04/11/10: 11 Puppies - Greenville, MS to Sanford, ME

One of these litters was from within the city limits of Greenville, and by law, they would have gone to the Greenville shelter, which gasses. Scrappy Jack was attacked by another dog, after which the owners surrendered him because they did not want to pay the vet bill for his surgery. Local adoption is very difficult because of the mass overpopulation problem in Mississippi as seen by the many "FREE Puppies" posted in the newspaper each week. It was urgent these dogs be moved to ensure their safety....

Another week passed and no one showed any interested in the two little girls.. Then the white puppy was returned to the shelter because the owner found out he was deaf, a death sentence for any dog in an over packed shelter. The mom and pups were left in a fenced in area at a shelter in AL when the pups were only 2 weeks and the others were also dumped at the same shelter. This shelter has no heat or adoption program and have no idea what the breeds are they have there. Lady and Champ had been living outdoors for many months due to a change in the family structure and priorities. Luckily, their family was very responsible and contacted Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT). The pair were no longer house trained and not guaranteed to be able to get along with other dogs. Because of this, it was difficult to find a foster home, but one was waiting in Chicago. Their travel time would have been at least 16 hrs by car with at approximately 13 different drivers, increasing the probability of escape. Transport by air was a must...

Susan and Scooter

01/31/10: 12 Dogs - FL & SC to NY & NH & ME

Muff is a little senior blind Shih Tzu who was taken to the local shelter by his family. The lady came into the shelter sobbing continuously, and said that she could no longer take care of Muff. It was evident by shelter staff that she was heartbroken over whatever situation she was in to have to give up her dog. She left Muff at the shelter along with his anti-anxiety medication and asked the staff to please find a home for him.

Kip is a young lab mix who was rescued from the side of the Interstate. The rescuer thought that maybe the dog had gotten away from some people running a fireworks store at a nearby exit, and she went to ask them. "No, he's not ours, we saw a car stop a couple hours ago and set him out." It was a blessing that Kip hadn't gotten hit by a car on the busy Interstate, while roaming along the roadside.

Jesse is a gorgeous little Lab mix girl who was sitting in a high kill shelter. A wonderful family in NJ, who had lost their cherished lab of many years, saw Jesse on Petfinder.com and were interested in giving her a new life. They named her Jesse after the SC state flower, Jessimine.

Chili, Nakota, Yankee, Polly and Timmy were all in the very overcrowded shelter and will be with wonderful rescues and taken care of until their forever families come along.

Scooter & Daisy are 9 y.o. beagle sibs from Florida that tragically outlived their owners. The husband went into hospice care & his wife died unexpectedly of a heart attack, leaving these two precious furkids orphans. The husbands dying request to his cousin Nancy, was to please pick up the girls from animal control and get them to safety.

Quimby is a 3 y.o. Dachshund mix, whose owners dropped him off at a kill shelter in Georgia when they were moving and he no longer fit into their lives...
